Sending Flowers in an Edmonton Winter: What You Need to Know

Delicate white roses and buds with dark green foliage

Edmonton winters are long, cold and grey, which is exactly why fresh flowers mean so much from November to March. But when it’s minus 25 outside, can flowers really survive the trip? Absolutely. Here’s how.

Can flowers handle the cold?

Fresh flowers are delicate. Even a few minutes in freezing temperatures can damage petals, turning them translucent or brown. The key is minimising time in the cold and wrapping well.

How we protect your bouquet

  • Layered wrapping: our bouquets are wrapped in several layers of luxury paper, which adds a little protection on the way.
  • Inside the car, not the trunk: bouquets ride with us, out of the cold.
  • Quick hand-off: the less time spent outside, the better, so we aim to go straight from the car to the door.

How you can help

Add detailed delivery instructions. In winter, “leave at the door” isn’t ideal. Instead, try:

  • “Please call on arrival”
  • “Leave with concierge”
  • “Ring buzzer #204”
  • “Deliver to reception”

Include the recipient’s phone number so our driver can reach them if nobody answers.

Pick a time they’ll be home. Let us know your preferred time when you order, and we’ll do our best.

Picking up in winter?

  • Bring the car to the door and warm it up first.
  • Keep the bouquet wrapped until you’re indoors.
  • Don’t leave flowers in a parked car, even for a short errand. Cars get cold fast.

Best flowers for winter

Some flowers are naturally tougher in cold, dry months:

  • Roses: strong, long-lasting and always in season
  • Carnations: hardy and can last up to two weeks
  • Chrysanthemums: sturdy and long-lived
  • Baby’s breath: adds softness and holds up beautifully

Deep reds and crisp whites also feel especially festive in winter, perfect for the holidays.

Keep them happy indoors

Winter air indoors is dry from the furnace. Top up the vase daily and keep flowers away from heating vents. More tips in how to make your bouquet last longer.

Winter occasions to send flowers

  • Holidays and Christmas
  • New Year’s
  • Valentine’s Day (order early, it’s the busiest flower day of the year, and prices are higher because wholesale flower costs go up)
  • Birthdays and anniversaries
  • “Thinking of you” on a grey day
